My Interview with London Film School & the Isle of Dogs Exhibition

My Interview with London Film School & the Isle of Dogs Exhibition In March 2018 I paid a visit to The London Film School to give a Masterclass for their Equal Access Network with Film London. I then met up with LFS’s OPEN Coordinator Catherine Pearson for a one on one interview before we took a tour of the Isle of Dogs Exhibition to see some of the puppets I animated! My Interview with The London Film School I gave a stop motion Masterclass at LFS on 8th March 2018 With Catherine Pearson. The IOD Exhibition was 10 mins walk away from LFS – it seemed rude not to go! Store X on the Strand. It had an amazing 50,000 visitors in 2 weeks! Megasaki city was a set that took over 5 months to prepare & shoot. All fitted with individual practical lights! Much of my time on the film was spent animating on the Municipal Dome interior The Sake Bar set – completely lit by practical lighting (fitted within the set) I animated the whole Bath House sequence (with the exception of one close up shot of the secret documents) I spent 3 whole months animating this sequence! The Isle of Dogs Exhibition initially ran for 10 days in March 2018 at Store X on the Strand in London. However it exceeded expectation with over 50,000 visitors so was extended to 2 weeks. It featured a lifesize version of the noodle bar set with a non stop queue from Wes Anderson fans hungry to see the beautiful sets & taste their noodles Megasaki City style!   Here’s the promotional video for the fantastic exhibition: https://youtu.be/V3Nj-CFoS-k?si=9T9WG9zCC-6rKo3w The London Film School Website Facebook : @ThelondonFilmSchool Twitter: @lfsorguk

Stop Motion Montreal 2018 Character Animation Workshop!

Stop Motion Montreal 2018 Character Animation Workshop! The 10th Anniversary of the Stop Motion Festival Montreal & I gave their first ever Animation Workshop!  11-13th September 2018 in Montreal, Canada Kicking off the 1st ever animation workshop at Stop Motion Montreal Chom 97 7 DJ legend Terry DiMonte is a legend in Montreal – he’s been DJing for 30 years! Hands up for my friend Mary Murphy who makes these excellent puppets! Oscar is one of the self proclaimed Mexican ‘Stop Motion Nerds!’ Encouraging the workshop attendees to critique & enjoy their own work The Stop Motion Montreal Animation Workshop Class of 2018! Director Erik was very insistent that you couldn’t have a 10th Anniversary Festival without cake! The man who started it all 30 years ago – Festival Director Erik Goulet receiving his honorary Chuck Steel Crew Golden Trophy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpzcNmkeBlc I also had loads of fun doing some promotion for the festival! Here’s my radio interview at Chom 97 7 with Montreal DJ legend Terry DiMonte  When I came into his studio I was stunned to see he was watching the trailer for The Magic Piano which I was Animation Supervisor for. He’d been researching me & was blown away by the complexity of this lesser known film. There’s a link to it below: Watch The Magic Piano on Apple TV I held the festival’s first ever animation workshop. running over 3 days in the build up to festival opening. We were visited by Christine Long from local news network CTV News Montreal who joined the class whilst I was demonstrating animation with multiple characters (as in over 50 characters!) The festival hosted a Virtual Reality Garden where I had my first time immersed in the Isle of Dogs Movie Virtual Reality Experience! This was a special treat for me as it was one of my last jobs on the film animating Boss voiced by Bill Murray for the sequence. It was fascinating to see myself & the crew beavering away in the studio in VR! You can see the Isle of Dogs team behind the scenes (I’m during the Boss shots) in 360° on YouTube. It’s best viewed on your mobile via the YouTube app. Click ‘Watch on YouTube’ in the bottom right of the video below & move your mobile…! On desktop, place your mouse over the video, left click & scroll around to explore inside the studio! https://youtu.be/JqXC46b1uUg?si=YsRLY4RJflGL1Doe I was fortunate enough to be given a tour of The National Film Board of Canada based in Montreal. Along with Chuck Steel Animation Supervisor Jody Meredith & expert armature maker Jim Randall, we explored an archive of Canadian stop motion puppets & sets. We were gifted to see their new films being shot The Subject by Patrick Bouchard & La Girouette by Jean-François Lévesque who also directed a lovely NFB stop mo short The Necktie. Finally we toured some of the new technology that the NFB is developing for film making. It was inspiring & fascinating, but to secret to say any more about….  Film Board La Girouette 0n-set Very convincing & detailed Mech-head for The Awakening made by Jim Randall The set for the Awakening had all the lights on different exposure channels so that they could be independently adjusted in post! With the puppet from The Necktie – a really nice well paced short film made at NFB Canada The set of The Subject was 1:1 scale so it was like walking into a haunted surgery! Director Patrick gave us each a miniature version of the anvil used in his film as a present. I was both touched & disturbed 😉 Facebook: @MontrealStopMotionTwitter: @StopMoMontrealInstagram: @StopMotionMontreal #StopMotion #Animation #Montreal #TimAllenanimation #PatrickBouchard #TheSubject #lagirouette #TheAwakening #TheNeckTie #NFBanimation

The Handmade Gift

The Handmade Gift Anna Mantzaris‘s beautiful and melancholy Christmas film for Greenpeace France.Ending with a pledge to make our cities breathable, the film tells the story of a little girl who appears to be protecting her bear from the cold, but it turns out she’s aware of an even more dangerous problem. I was one of 2 main animators along with Steve Warne. https://vimeo.com/307120609?fl=pl&fe=sh A wonderful project to be involved with in so many ways. It was fantastic to be with many of my friends all together on the crew. My animation was most of the shots indoors preparing the gift. Come behind the scenes to see the team in action in the video & photos below. Featuring interviews with director Anna Mantzaris, Drew Roper from Yamination Studios plus myself! Video footage shot by Luke Furmage. https://vimeo.com/307860615?fl=pl&fe=sh Client: Greenpeace FranceAgency: 84.ParisProduced by: Passion Animation StudiosAnimation Studio: Yamination Studios   The photos were beautifully taken Ian Davies – thankyou so much for capturing the moments! Day 1 of shooting & we discuss Anna’s plans for the feeling & movement of the lead character Animators Steve & Tim taking our 1st look at the puppet & discussing how to get the most from it Set Dresser Catherine is now putting up the Xmas decorations Director of Photography Donna Wade bringing a warm glow to the studio (& the set) 😉 & in the yellow door…. it’s Director Anna Mantzaris! Producer Becky Perryman of Passion Pictures & Drew Roper of Yamination Studios keeping our machine well oiled My 1st shot ready to shoot 🙂 My 1st shot & you can see the cables powering the light in the laptop I did a lot of fiddly shots & here I’m working with the tiny pencil in the litle girl’s hand It’s beginning to look a lot like Xmas – Anna plans the final touches Using Yamination Studios spray booth in their stop motion workshop Hugo on the starting line – on your marks, get set…. GO!!! Anna & Steve prepare the 1st shot of the film Animator Steve Warne brings the opening shot to life The hand of animator Steve Warne is behind you… Testing the way that I’ve rigged the teddy bear’s hand in to the puppet’s hand for intricate control I used a surface gauge pressing into the puppet’s arm to push the tiniest of movements When not adding VFX to Anna’s films Hugo is a super villian scheming world domination Checking frame by frame decisions to give the right feeling & performance I use tiny wire rigs to hold the pencil securely into her hand My fingers were often too big for the tiny puppet so I use narrow steal rods to bend the puppets joints Hugo Vieites Caamaño is Anna’s secret weapon, helping plan & organize everything on her films It’s a time of giving… 🙂 Yamination Studios founder & Director/Producer Drew Roper spreading Xmas joy! It’s been so nice animating for Anna Mantzaris & this is our second project together. I was very excited to animate for her earlier in 2018 on her suspenseful short film Good Intentions  https://vimeo.com/278537892?fl=pl&fe=sh The Handmade Gift full credits: Client: Greenpeace FranceAgency: 84.ParisCreative Directors: Léo Sattin & Julien SipraProduction Company: Passion Animation StudiosDirector: Anna MantzarisExecutive Producers; Belle PalmerProducers: Becky Perryman, Sibylle PreussProduction Assistants: Laure Rees-Smith & Shelby MaddockStudio: Yamination StudiosStudio Producer/Art Director: Drew RoperStudio Assistant: Laura VincentDOP: Donna WadeAnimators: Tim Allen & Steve WarneAssistant Animator: George CarmanVFX Supervisor: Hugo Vieites CaamañoVFX Animator: German DiezLighting: Surinder SinghAssistant Lighting: Kat HarveyRigger, Set Dresser & Lead Model Maker: Michael PriceSet Dresser & Model Maker: George CarmanSet Dresser, Costumes & Model Maker: Catherine ProwseSet Designer & Lead Model Maker: Rohan WadhamSet Builder & Model Maker: Tristan PritchardSet Builder & Model Maker: Hetty BaxCostumes; Claire Cohen & Martha MantzarisModel Maker and Costumes: Kat SimpsonModel Maker and Costumes: Adeena GrubbModel Maker: Amy HoldenModel Maker: Isabelle KennedyModel Maker : Sam ClarkeModel Maker: Stella PrzytulaModel Maker: Fung Ye TsangRunner: Joao Lanham Sound Design: Phil Brookes Post Production: UNITPost Production Producer: Kirsty RatcliffeColourist: Denny Cooper BTS Videographer: Luke FurmageBTS Photographer: Ian Davies

At-issue

At-issue I was a part of the short film At-issue from the very early days of Yamination Studios as a Lead Stop Motion Animator. The film was the creation & passion of company founder Drew Roper & funded by Sky Arts & a successful Kickstarter campaign. Just below is the beautifully made behind the scenes documentary by director/producer Drew & the team. At the start of the documentary, I animated the Yamination intro logo which was the very 1st appearance & animation of the central character Bart Yogart!: https://vimeo.com/198860258?fl=pl&fe=sh The film is owned by Sky TV so isn’t online for the moment, but here’s the Teaser (animated by James Carlisle) & a sneak peek at the audition sequence (animated by Andy Biddle): At-issue | Teaser Audition Arrival Sequence https://vimeo.com/74868265?fl=pl&fe=sh Photos from the very beginning of At-issue as Yamination Studios set up to start the stop motion shoot! The very 1st shot of Bart & at this stage his look was top secret so couldn’t be shown in this photo! Drew gluing together the cinema set in time for a visit from Sky Ats Sarah Crombie makes the finishing touches to the beautiful art deco cinema Prepping the 1st set of At-issue with Sarah, Drew, Tim & Chris Tim giving a very early interview for Sky Arts Page came on a studio visit & helped me prep the set for my next shot I asked for the washing line to made from elastic for Bart to press his body into Check out all the wire rigs to control the washing swinging around The elastic worked a treat for making Bart press into the washing line & bounce of! I’m using the red tacky wax pot to help prop Bart’s foot up Animating Bart running along the street with the camera on a moving track behind me The Yamination Nation grows!
